M.S. / Ph.D Applications & Admissions

Overview

  • Apply on-line through Cornell graduate school
  • January 15 application deadline
  • GRE general test scores, with a minimum analytical plus quantitative score of 1400 (convert analytical test scores here)
  • Application consists of transcripts, statement of purpose and three letters of recommendation (important!).

International students from countries in which the native language is not English and students who have not studied for at least two years at a university or college in a country where the native language is English:

  • Must submit TOEFL scores.
  • Minimum TOEFL score is 600 (paper based) or 237 computer-based.
  • Minimum TOEFL scores for iBT (Internet based test):
    Writing, 20; Listening, 15; Reading, 20; Speaking, 22.
    *Please submit individual scores*

The code to send GRE and TOEFL scores is 2098.

Financial Aid for M.S. and Ph.D. Students

  • Virtually all M.S./Ph.D. students are admitted with full academic year support providing tuition and a stipend for living expenses.
  • Financial aid request is part of admissions application
  • Financial support may consist of a fellowship, teaching assistantship, research assistantship or some combination of the above.
  • Support provides tuition and stipend for living expenses.

Fellowships

  • Awarded primarily on basis of scholastic record and the promise of achievement.
  • Cornell Fellowships typically provide support for first year of study.

Graduate Research Assistantships

  • Research assistants work under a professor on a project sponsored by a government agency or industry.
  • Most assistantships are for nine-month periods, although some summer appointments are made.

Teaching assistants

  • Lead discussion or laboratory sections for undergraduate courses in mechanics and engineering mathematics.
  • This experience enhances graduate student’s understanding of basic concepts and increases their ability to make oral presentations on technical subjects.
  • 15-20 hours/week during academic year.
  • A limited number of summer teaching assistantships are available.
